Last night as Little and I were sitting in his bed, he asked if we could do the prayer. So we started out with our nightly prayer of Now I lay me...down to sleep.
We have said this prayer so many times with our kids, that sometimes I think in my mind I forget that I am actually talking to God as we are saying it. Little is so innocent. He lays in his bed and says the words with such animation. He emphasizes the word "die" every night...and it makes me shudder every time. But that is how we've always said this prayer..."If I die before I wake...I pray the Lord my soul to take". I would change it, but it is kind of an important part. If we die before we wake...we would want God to take our souls. Plain and simple.
Sometimes when I lay down in bed to pray...my prayers are so complex. I have so many prayer requests and so many things on my mind...that half the time I fall asleep before I finish. So last night, I tried the simple prayer that I say with the boys...
Now I lay me...down to sleepNot a lot of room for requests...or confusion. Just a simple request for God to take my soul if I don't get to talk to him tomorrow. This thought became a reality too near and dear this week...so I decided I am done being almost ready. My life is His. My children are His. My marriage is His. And I just want Him to know that if I die before I wake...my soul is His as well.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
If I die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take.
Amen
I have posted this video before, but it is one of my all time favorites of Little. He was 18 months old...and I just love watching him say this prayer. I have taken video of him saying it several times and I'll see if I can post them too. Have a blessed day!

When my oldest was a baby, my mother-in-law taught me this prayer but changed the ending part because of the "die" part for the young ones. We've said it every night also, but a little differently.
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
And in the morning when I wake
I pray he'll guide each step I take.
Just another take on it. Love it - and just like your children, my kids would ask for it every night. What a blessing!
