Let me back up. I guess I need to explain what a bonus mom is in the first place. I didn't realize that bonus moms even had a name until I read Jen Hatmaker's latest book 'Of Mess and Moxie'...which is amazing by the way. It is a must read. As I read this chapter about how raising children takes a village, it occurred to me that I needed to thank the people in my children's lives who have become their bonus parents.
Bonus parents (in my humble opinion) don't take the place of parents...they are exactly what the title says. They are a bonus in the lives of our children. People who get our kids...and love them anyway...are a true blessing. Our boys have had the opportunity to have many bonus parents and I'm so grateful for their help in raising them. We COULD NOT do it without them. I can only hope that I am as good of a bonus mom to my friends' kids as they are to mine.
This past week, I received a message on facebook from one of my own bonus moms and was thrilled that she was coming to town. We made plans to meet for lunch and my own mom was to join us as well. You see...one of the best things about my bonus moms is that they were friends with my mom too.
Going back in time, I've had many bonus parents. But I've had three bonus moms that truly helped me become a better "me".
The first one came around when I was in late grade school, early teenage years. She was the mom of a good friend and I spent a great deal of time at their house. Her name was Bev and she french braided my hair so tight my eyes would pull to a slant. She used Paul Mitchell products so the hair never EVER moved once it was in the perfect braid with teased bangs. When I was the lovely age of 13, I spent a lot of time in fights with my own parents and would spend time with Bev and Crissy. I thought they were my safe place, but as it turns out, I think Bev was doing my mom a favor and letting her have some "time away" from her lovely teenage daughter. I think they spent time talking about my slight downfalls while Crissy and I talked on our swatch phones and chatted about boys. She meant the world to me and I loved her dearly. Mom and I both did.
My second bonus mom came into the picture when I was about 16. I started babysitting for her girls and we had an instant connection. Her name is Kim and she also had a friendship with my mom. She and I spent many nights talking about my poor choices in boys, clothing, music, etc. I spent so much time at their house thinking I was "getting away" from my parents, when I'm certain Kim was helping my mom out by letting me stay there. She was influential in the person I've become and I'm so thankful for her part in my life. When she messaged and asked me if I had time for lunch, I was sure to make it happen. I sat with my mom and Kim today and we chatted about life and ate sandwiches and salads. She asked about my own kids and it was so fun telling her about the boys and our lives. She has had the opportunity to watch (from afar) our family grow up and I'm thankful every day that she's still a part of our lives.
My third bonus mom was of course Nana Sue. She came into my life twenty years ago when I met her son. She welcomed me with open arms and never closed them. She and my mom were already friends and I had the opportunity to watch their friendship grow as they helped our family become what we are. They sat together as we exchanged our wedding vows, as our children were born, at hundreds of ballgames, and have been together through everything our family has experienced. I hope and pray that I'll have the same relationship with my daughter in laws and their mothers sometime in the future.
As I've gotten older, I realize you can't do life alone. You need a strong family, good friends, and LOTS of bonus parents. How cool to be in the part of life where I get to be friends with my bonus parents and with the bonus parents of my children.
If you have these people in your life, thank them. Thank them for loving you...changing you...supporting you...and for just being present in your life and in the lives of your children. If I've learned anything in the past year, it is that you might not have as much time as you think. Say it now and let them know how much of a bonus they've been.
Have a blessed day!
